The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
