It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will take a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc begins.
New Release Strategy
From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — including more content, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.
Learning from Past Breaks
The series anime previously took a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to supply fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the news, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for time.
This concludes of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of production, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each annually, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
