This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together resides a deep meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He fears the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the kind of problems that come with any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
