US Justice Department Joins Legal Challenge to Block the State of California's New Electoral Map
Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
