Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
